Literacy
At Woorinen District Primary School, we are committed to fostering a love of literacy and empowering students to become confident readers, writers, and communicators. Using evidence-based practices like the Science of Reading, we provide targeted instruction to develop strong foundational skills. Our literacy-rich environment includes engaging lessons, small group support, and a welcoming library. We celebrate literacy through events like book weeks and author visits, encouraging a lifelong love of reading and learning.
At WDPS we use the following programs:
Grades 1-6 - Spelling Mastery
We use Spelling Mastery, a direct instruction program that teaches spelling through a combination of phonemic, morphemic, and whole-word strategies. The program is carefully sequenced to help students build skills gradually, starting with the most basic sound-letter relationships and progressing to more complex patterns and rules. Spelling Mastery provides explicit instruction, guided practice, and regular review to ensure students gain confidence and accuracy in spelling.
Grades F-3 - Reading Eggs
Students also have access to Reading Eggs, an interactive online program that supports reading development through fun, engaging activities. Reading Eggs offers personalised lessons in phonics, sight words, comprehension, and spelling, helping students to build essential literacy skills at their own pace while making learning enjoyable.
